Pellet smokers give you real wood-fired flavour with set-and-forget control: load the hopper, set the temperature, and the controller feeds hardwood pellets to hold it. The hard part is choosing one, because most pellet smoker advice is written for American backyards, not Australian sun, salt air and year-round cooking.
This guide covers every pellet smoker we stock, with our two lead brands first: Traeger and Yoder Smokers. Green Mountain Grills and Nexgrill follow further down. We've been cooking on a Yoder YS640s since 2014, and we sell, deliver and install these smokers across Sydney, so this is a hands-on guide to finding the best pellet smoker for an Aussie backyard, not a spec-sheet roundup.

The only showroom in NSW with Traeger and Yoder. Compare them in person at our Wetherill Park showroom, home to the only YS1500s on permanent display in Australia.
Free Sydney metro delivery on every Traeger and Yoder, plus free installation on freestanding Traeger and Yoder smokers (the Yoder YS640s Built-In is delivery only). Green Mountain Grills and Nexgrill arrive flat-packed, with assembly available for a fee.

Quick Recommendations
Don't want to read the whole guide? Here's the short version:
- For most Australian backyards: Traeger Woodridge Pro (6,258 cm², WiFIRE® app control, Super Smoke Mode) or the smaller Traeger Pro 575 (3,709 cm²).
- For serious low-and-slow cooks: Yoder YS640s, a heavy steel cooker (3.2 mm cook chamber) made in Kansas that can also grill over the flame.
- Insulated for cold or windy days: Traeger Ironwood XL (dual-wall) or Traeger Timberline XL (fully insulated).
- Large pellet smoker for big cooks: Yoder YS1500s (about 9,677 cm²) or Traeger Timberline XL (8,516 cm²).
- Small pellet smoker or portable: Traeger Ranger (1,187 cm²) or Green Mountain Grills Trek Prime 2.0, which also runs on 12V DC.
- Budget pellet smoker: the Nexgrill Oakford range.
Our honest take: if you can, come and stand in front of a Traeger and a Yoder before you decide. They suit different cooks, and seeing the steel, the controllers and the size in person settles it faster than any spec sheet.

Traeger figures are copied from Traeger Australia's spec sheets (traegergrills.com.au); the warranty is Traeger Australia's 3-year limited warranty on grills. † Traeger Australia lists the Pro 22 in imperial only, so these figures are converted, and it does not state a maximum temperature (shown as —). * Converted from Yoder's published imperial figures (yodersmokers.com) and rounded. ‡ Yoder's top temperatures are for direct grilling with optional GrillGrate® panels fitted, converted from the YS640s and YS1500s manuals; we have not confirmed a YS480s figure (shown as —). The YS640s Built-In is left out because Yoder does not publish a separate spec sheet for it.
Reading the table: Traeger gives you more models, lighter weights and app features across the range. Yoder is far heavier for its cooking area, which reflects its thicker steel, and every Yoder has app control. For a closer look at two flagships, read our Yoder YS640s vs Traeger Timberline comparison.
What Makes Australian Conditions Different?
The Climate Challenge
UV: a pellet smoker lives outside all year here, so finishes, plastics and controllers cop a lot of sun. A fitted cover helps any smoker last.
Humidity and salt air: pellets soak up moisture, and damp pellets swell and can jam the auger. Coastal homes also need to keep an eye on steel and fasteners.
Heat, cold and wind: a smoker that holds temperature well uses its pellets more evenly through a long cook, whether it's a 40°C day or a windy winter night.
Why Some Pellet Smokers Struggle Here
Thin, uninsulated bodies lose heat in wind and cold, so the controller has to burn more pellets to keep up. Pellets left in the hopper for weeks in humid weather can turn to sawdust. And a smoker bought without local dealer support can leave you waiting on parts.
What Works in Australian Conditions
- Insulation or heavy steel: the Traeger Ironwood XL is dual-wall, the Timberline XL is fully insulated, and Yoder uses 3.2 mm (YS480s, YS640s) or 4.8 mm (YS1500s) steel.
- Dry pellet storage: keep pellets sealed, for example in a Traeger StayDry Pellet Bin, and empty the hopper if the smoker will sit for a while (most Traegers have a hopper clean-out).
- A fitted cover for UV and rain.
- An authorised dealer, so the manufacturer's warranty is supported locally.
Green Mountain Grills: Flexible Power and App Control
Green Mountain Grills (GMG) is another pellet smoker brand we stock. Feature Comparison: What Matters in Australia
Build Quality
Yoder: 3.2 mm steel cook chambers (4.8 mm on the YS1500s), made in Kansas. Traeger: dual-wall on the Ironwood XL and fully insulated on the Timberline XL; the Pro series and Woodridge Pro are lighter, easier-to-move grills. GMG and Nexgrill: lighter flat-packed builds that suit cooks who move their smoker or want to spend less.
Temperature Control
Every smoker here uses a digital controller to feed pellets and hold the set temperature. Traeger quotes the Pro 22's Digital Pro Controller holding within +/-9 °C. Yoder's ACS controller and Traeger's WiFIRE® models add app control, and the Ironwood XL and Timberline XL have touchscreen displays.
WiFi Control
Traeger: WiFIRE® on the Pro 575, Woodridge Pro, Ironwood XL and Timberline XL. Yoder: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on every S-Series model. GMG: WiFi on the Prime 2.0 models. Nexgrill: Bluetooth and WiFi on the Oakford range. WiFi is handy for overnight cooks, but not essential.
Warranty
Traeger: 3-year limited warranty on grills (Traeger Australia). Yoder: 10 years on the cooking chamber and 3 years on the ACS controller. GMG and Nexgrill: see each product page for the manufacturer's terms. Buying from an authorised dealer keeps your warranty supported locally.
Delivery and Set-Up
Traeger and Yoder: free Sydney metro delivery, and free installation on freestanding models. Yoder YS640s Built-In: free Sydney metro delivery; installation is not included. GMG and Nexgrill: flat-packed, with assembly available for a fee.
Which Pellets Should You Use?
Good pellets matter as much as the smoker. Use quality hardwood pellets and keep them dry. For Traeger grills we stock genuine Traeger pellets; our Traeger pellet flavour guide explains which wood suits which meat. Yoder's YS640s manual recommends BBQr's Delight pellets, which Yoder uses for its factory testing and development.

It depends on how you cook. Traeger suits most backyards: WiFIRE app control on the Pro 575 and up, Super Smoke Mode on the Woodridge Pro, Ironwood XL and Timberline XL, and a 3-year limited warranty from Traeger Australia. Yoder suits cooks who want a heavy steel cooker that can also grill over the flame, with a 10-year cook chamber warranty from Yoder. What is the difference between Traeger and Yoder pellet smokers?
Traeger offers a wide range, from the portable Ranger to the Timberline XL, with WiFIRE app control, pellet sensors on the Woodridge Pro and Ironwood XL, and the EZ-Clean Grease and Ash Keg on the Woodridge Pro, Ironwood XL and Timberline XL. Do pellet smokers need electricity?

Traeger rates the Ranger (1,187 cm²) at 6 burgers or 1 rib rack, the Pro 575 (3,709 cm²) at 24 burgers, 5 rib racks or 4 chickens, the Woodridge Pro (6,258 cm²) at 6 chickens, 8 rib racks or 6 pork butts, and the Timberline XL (8,516 cm²) at 12 chickens, 16 rib racks or 12 pork butts.
