We stock both formats they produce: the signature six-wood Contest Mix 9kg for pellet smoker hoppers (the recipe behind countless competition wins), and the 450g single-wood smoking pellet range (Cherry, Pecan, Hickory, Mesquite, Jack Daniel's) for smoke tubes and smoker boxes. Contest Mix Breakdown

The Six-Wood Recipe Behind Contest Mix

Most BBQ pellets are one wood, sometimes two. The BBQr's Delight Contest Mix layers six hardwoods in proven proportions, each chosen for a specific role in the smoke profile. Here is what each wood contributes and why this blend wins.

Smoke Intensity
Mild Medium Bold

Cherry

Mild

Slightly sweet, slightly tart smoke with deep mahogany colour development.

Role in the Blend

Visual appeal and gentle sweetness. The competition cook's secret for ribs that look as good as they taste.

Oak

Medium

Clean, balanced, neutral-but-smoky. The structural backbone of nearly every premium competition blend.

Role in the Blend

The base layer. Oak burns clean and consistent, holding the other woods together without competing for flavour.

Pecan

Medium

Nutty, slightly sweet, rounded. Like a softer hickory with a buttery edge.

Role in the Blend

The crossover layer. Pecan softens hickory's intensity and adds warmth, helping the blend work across pork and poultry.

Hickory

Bold

Strong, bacon-like, classic American BBQ smoke. The flavour most people picture when they say "smoked".

Role in the Blend

The signature smoke punch. Hickory carries the recognisable BBQ flavour that judges look for in brisket and pork shoulder.

Maple

Mild

Sweet, subtle, clean. The lightest hardwood, pairs naturally with poultry and any cook where balance matters more than punch.

Role in the Blend

The sweetness modulator. Maple's gentle sugar smooths the harder edges of hickory, keeping the smoke complex but never harsh.

Apple

Mild

Sweet, fruity, mellow. The friendliest wood, lifts delicate proteins without overpowering. Pork's natural partner.

Role in the Blend

The pork affinity. Apple is why Contest Mix performs exceptionally well on pork shoulder, ribs, and pulled pork.

Why This Blend Wins

Layered smoke, not stacked smoke

Competition judges score for complexity without harshness. Six woods in proven proportions deliver more flavour notes than any single-species pellet can, while the oak base and mild fruit woods prevent the bold hickory and pecan from dominating. The result is brisket with depth, ribs with colour, and pork with sweetness all from the same bag.

BBQr's Delight FAQs

Questions About BBQr's Delight Pellets

What buyers ask before committing to BBQr's Delight, whether you are choosing the 9kg Contest Mix for your pellet smoker hopper or the 450g smoking pellets for a smoke tube.

Are BBQr's Delight pellets any good?

BBQr's Delight is one of the longest-running American pellet brands, founded in 1989 from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and used by competition cooks across the United States for decades. Every product is made from 100% real hardwood with no fillers, no binders, and no flavour oil sprays, the same uncompromised production approach across both their 9kg hopper pellets and their 450g smoking pellet range.

The 9kg Contest Mix is the proven six-wood blend that put the brand on the competition map. The 450g single-wood smoking pellets (Cherry, Pecan, Hickory, Mesquite, and Jack Daniel's) are the brand's flavour-tube range for smoke tubes and smoker boxes. Both formats use the same hardwood quality standard that built BBQr's Delight's reputation.

What is in the BBQr's Delight Contest Mix blend?

Contest Mix is a six-wood hardwood blend made up of cherry, oak, pecan, hickory, maple, and apple. The blend is formulated to deliver layered smoke complexity from a single bag, with oak as the structural base, hickory carrying the signature American BBQ punch, pecan and maple smoothing the profile, and apple and cherry adding fruit-forward sweetness and colour development.

The proportions are proprietary to BBQr's Delight and were dialled in across decades of competition cooking. The result is a blend that works across brisket, ribs, pork shoulder, and poultry without needing to switch pellets between cuts.

What is BBQr's Delight Contest Mix best for cooking?

Contest Mix is designed as an all-rounder for mixed-protein cooking sessions, which is exactly what competition cooks need. It performs strongly across pork shoulder, ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and poultry without requiring you to switch pellets between cuts.

It is particularly well-suited to weekend cooks where you might run ribs, pork shoulder, and chicken across the same session. Single-species pellets give you more control over individual cuts, but Contest Mix gives you one bag that genuinely flatters everything you put on the smoker. For brisket-only or steak-only cooks where you want maximum control, a single species or stronger blend might be a better pick.

What is the difference between Contest Mix 9kg and the 450g smoking pellets?

Different products, different jobs. Both are BBQr's Delight 100% hardwood pellets, but they are designed for completely different cooker setups.

Contest Mix 9kg is pellet grill fuel for filling the hopper of a pellet smoker (Yoder, Traeger, GMG, RecTec, Camp Chef, and so on). It burns continuously to produce both the heat AND smoke that drive the cook. The six-wood blend (cherry, oak, pecan, hickory, maple, apple) gives layered competition flavour across the entire cook from a single bag.

450g smoking pellets are flavour pellets designed for smoke tubes (A-MAZE-N, LIZZQ), smoker boxes, and foil packets. They work in any cooker: gas grill, charcoal kettle, kamado, electric smoker, even pellet smokers (loaded in a smoke tube on top of the hopper for layered flavour). Single-wood format means you can match the wood precisely to the cut: Cherry on pork, Mesquite on beef, Hickory on ribs. One 450g bag delivers around 60 cooks.

Many pitmasters run both: Contest Mix in the hopper for sustained heat and base smoke, plus a smoke tube of single-wood smoking pellets on top for an extra flavour layer. This is the competition pitmaster technique.

Are BBQr's Delight pellets made in the USA?

Yes. BBQr's Delight pellets are manufactured in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, USA, and imported through the authorised Australian distribution channel. The brand sources its hardwoods (cherry, oak, pecan, hickory, maple, apple) from American forests where these species naturally occur.

The bag we sell at our Sydney showroom is the same bag American competition teams use at major BBQ events. We are an authorised Australian dealer for the brand, so every bag is current-batch genuine product, never grey-import or aftermarket.

Do you deliver BBQr's Delight pellets across Sydney and Australia?

Yes, with two delivery tiers. Across the Sydney metro area we offer same-day or next-business-day delivery depending on your suburb. Orders dispatch from our Wetherill Park showroom in Sydney's west.

For the rest of Australia, BBQr's Delight ships through our standard parcel service. Pickup is also available any business day if you would rather skip delivery.
