Most fire starter advice comes from Europe or America. Different humidity. Different fire safety regulations. Different charcoal types.
Australia's conditions demand fire starters that work reliably in our climate. After years selling and using Pyralit products in Sydney, we know what works for Australian charcoal grilling, kamado cooking, and pellet smoking.
This guide covers the complete Pyralit range we stock, why Pyralit works better than alternatives in Australian conditions, and which products suit different grilling setups.
We've been using Pyralit since we opened BBQ Republic. It's what we personally use to light every charcoal cook. We stock it because it works.

Why Pyralit Works in Australian Conditions
The Australian Challenge
Humidity: Coastal areas and summer humidity affect fire starter performance. Cheap petroleum-based starters struggle in damp conditions. Traditional newspaper gets soggy.
Fire safety regulations: Australia has strict fire safety rules. You need fire starters that ignite predictably and burn controllably. No flare-ups. No accelerants.
Charcoal types: Australian lump charcoal (especially premium brands like Argie Grillz has different density than European charcoal. You need fire starters with enough heat output to ignite dense hardwood.
Year-round outdoor cooking: Australians grill year-round. Your fire starters face humidity, UV exposure, and temperature extremes in storage.
Why Pyralit is Different
100% natural and organic: No petroleum. No chemicals. No additives. Just compressed wood fiber and natural wax. Burns clean without chemical smell.
Waterproof: Pyralit products resist moisture. They work in humidity. They ignite in damp conditions. You can literally light them wet.
Consistent performance: Every cube burns the same. Every ignition is predictable. No guessing, no failed starts.
Australian availability: We stock the full range. No waiting for European imports. No grey-market products with questionable storage history.
Clean burn: Pyralit produces no chemical residue, no petroleum smell, no off-flavors in your food. Just clean heat.
What Makes Pyralit Better Than Alternatives
vs Petroleum Fire Starters: No chemical smell. No petroleum residue. No risk of flavor contamination.
vs Newspaper and Cardboard: Waterproof. Consistent burn time. Doesn't produce ash that clogs kamado vents.
vs Electric Starters: No power cord. Works anywhere. No wait for heating element. Faster overall.
vs Charcoal Chimney Only: Hero Ignition Unit is faster than chimney and produces less ash. Firestarter Cubes work with or without chimney.
vs Cheap Cubes: Burns longer (8-10 minutes vs 3-4 minutes). Fully lights charcoal bed. Reliable ignition every time.

How to Use Pyralit Products
Lighting a Big Green Egg (or Any Kamado)
Method 1: Firestarter Cubes Only
- Load charcoal into firebox (amount depends on cook length)
- Place ONE Pyralit Firestarter Cube in center of charcoal pile
- Place smaller charcoal pieces directly touching the cube
- Light cube with match or lighter
- Leave lid open for 2-3 minutes while cube establishes flame
- Close lid, open both vents fully
- Wait 10-15 minutes for charcoal to ash over
- Start closing vents 25°C before target temperature
One cube is enough. The 8-10 minute burn time fully ignites the charcoal bed. We've never needed more than one cube for any Big Green Egg cook.
New to the Big Green Egg? Read our Big Green Egg Size Guide to find the right size for your needs.
Method 2: Hero Ignition Unit (Faster)
- Place 1-2 Firestarter Cubes at base of Hero Unit
- Fill Hero Unit with lump charcoal (smaller pieces first)
- Light cubes
- Wait 8-10 minutes (charcoal will be fully lit and ashed over)
- Wearing gloves, carefully pour hot charcoal into kamado firebox
- Close lid, adjust vents
This method is faster (8-10 minutes vs 15-20 minutes) and produces less ash in the firebox. Better for kamados where ash buildup affects airflow.
Lighting a Kettle Grill
Charcoal Pile Method: Arrange charcoal in pyramid shape, place 1-2 Firestarter Cubes at base, light cubes, wait 15-20 minutes until charcoal is ashed over, spread charcoal for two-zone or direct cooking.
Chimney Starter Method: Place 1-2 Firestarter Cubes under chimney starter, fill chimney with charcoal, light cubes, wait 15-20 minutes, pour lit charcoal into grill.
Pyralit works better than newspaper in chimneys. Longer burn time, no ash fragments blocking chimney holes, waterproof if stored outdoors.
Lighting a Pellet Smoker
Some pellet smoker owners use Pyralit to speed up initial ignition or restart after auger jams. Place 1 Firestarter Cube in firebox, light it, add handful of pellets on top. Once pellets ignite, run smoker normally. This bypasses the hot rod igniter, which can be slow or fail in cold weather. Not necessary for normal operation, but useful for troubleshooting or cold-weather starts.
Not sure which pellet smoker to buy? Read our Best Pellet Smokers for Australia guide.
Storage and Handling
Store in dry location: Although Pyralit is waterproof, dry storage extends shelf life and ensures immediate ignition.
Keep cubes in original packaging: The wax coating stays intact longer when cubes aren't exposed to air.
Away from direct sunlight: UV won't damage Pyralit, but excessive heat can soften wax coating.
Indefinite shelf life: Properly stored Pyralit lasts years.
Pyralit vs Other Fire Starters
vs Cheap Firestarter Cubes
Cheap cubes: Burn 3-4 minutes. Often fail to fully ignite charcoal. Contain petroleum additives. Inconsistent performance.
Pyralit cubes: Burn 8-10 minutes. Always fully ignite charcoal. 100% natural. Consistent every time.
Price comparison: Cheap cubes cost $10-15 per 48-pack. Pyralit costs $19.50. The $4-9 difference buys you reliability and natural ingredients.
Our take: The extra $4-9 is worth it for consistent ignition and no chemical smell.
vs Petroleum Fire Lighters
Petroleum starters: Work fast. Smell terrible. Risk petroleum flavor contaminating food. Not waterproof. Create acrid smoke.
Pyralit: Slightly slower. Zero smell. No flavor contamination. Waterproof. Clean burn.
Our take: Never use petroleum-based starters for food. The contamination risk isn't worth the 2-minute time saving.
vs Newspaper and Cardboard
Newspaper/cardboard: Free. Inconsistent. Fails in humidity. Creates excessive ash. Blocked kamado vents. Not waterproof.
Pyralit: Costs money. Consistent. Works in any weather. Minimal ash. Won't clog vents. Waterproof.
Our take: If you cook once a month and don't mind failed starts, newspaper works. If you cook regularly and value reliability, spend $19.50 on a 48-pack that lasts a year.
vs Electric Starters
Electric starters: Require power outlet. Take 10-15 minutes. Heating element eventually fails. Can't use while camping or at beach.
Pyralit: No power needed. Works anywhere. 8-10 minutes with Hero Unit. Never fails. Portable.
Our take: Electric starters are fine if you always cook near power and don't mind the cord. Pyralit offers more flexibility.
vs Charcoal Chimney Starter Only
Chimney only: Requires separate fire starter (newspaper, cubes, etc.). Produces more ash. Takes 15-20 minutes. Creates hot spots.
Hero Ignition Unit + Pyralit: Integrated system. Minimal ash. 8-10 minutes. Even ignition.
Our take: Chimneys work well with Pyralit cubes underneath. The Hero Ignition Unit is the premium upgrade for frequent cooks.
