FireBoard FAQ

Common questions about the FireBoard Spark, the Pulse and how they stack up against MEATER. Cannot find what you need? Call 0434 010 411.

What is the difference between the FireBoard Spark and the FireBoard Pulse?

Two different tools for two different jobs.

The FireBoard Spark is an instant-read digital thermometer for quick spot-checks: insert the probe, get an accurate reading in about a second, pull it out. Used for checking doneness mid-cook, verifying meat resting temps, or quick reads on multiple cuts. The Spark is your everyday handheld.

The FireBoard Pulse is a wireless leave-in probe thermometer. Insert the probe into the meat before the cook, close the dome, and monitor temps continuously from your phone via Bluetooth and the FireBoard app. Used for unattended low-and-slow cooks where you need ambient and meat temps streamed live.

FireBoard vs MEATER, which should I buy?

Different philosophies for different cooks.

MEATER wins on simplicity. The app is polished, the setup is fast, and the wire-free probe design means no cables running out of your cooker. Best for cooks who want to plug in and trust the system. Browse MEATER.

FireBoard wins on depth. Real graphs, multi-probe support, cloud logging, export-ready data, alerts you can configure with precision. Best for cooks who want telemetry: comp cooks, BBQ obsessives, anyone running long cooks where the difference between 95C and 97C ambient actually matters to them.

If you cannot decide, the Spark is a low-risk way to try the FireBoard ecosystem since it does not commit you to a wireless workflow.

Does the FireBoard Pulse work with WiFi or only Bluetooth?

The FireBoard Pulse uses Bluetooth for probe-to-phone connection. Range is roughly 30 to 45 metres in open conditions, less through walls and dense materials.

For continuous remote monitoring from anywhere (away from the cooker, away from home), FireBoard's higher-tier models with the built-in WiFi gateway are the option. The Pulse on its own is a Bluetooth-only device best suited to cooks where you stay within house-and-yard range.

What is the FireBoard app and what does it do?

The FireBoard app is where the brand earns its reputation. Free on iOS and Android. Once paired with the Pulse, you get:

Live temperature graphs showing meat temp and ambient over the duration of the cook. Configurable alerts for target temps, temperature drops, lid-open events. Cook history stored permanently so you can compare brisket #3 to brisket #15. Cloud sync so the data lives somewhere safer than your phone's local storage. CSV export for cooks who want to analyse data in their own tools.

Compared to most cooking apps, FireBoard is closer to data analysis software than a consumer toy.

Is the Spark probe really accurate to 1 second?

Yes, the Spark gives a stable temperature reading within roughly 1 second of probe insertion, with accuracy rated to 0.5C across the working range. This is the same speed and accuracy band as a Thermapen ONE, which is the industry benchmark.

For BBQ work this matters more than people realise. Slow-responding thermometers (5+ seconds) lose accuracy as the probe equilibrates to the meat temp slowly, often reading too low. Fast instant-reads pull a clean number before the probe affects the reading.

How long does the Pulse battery last?

The Pulse charges in the included base station between cooks and runs about 20+ hours on a full charge. Long enough for an overnight brisket cook from setup to slice with charge to spare.

The Spark uses a standard rechargeable battery with weeks of standby life since it only draws power during active reads. Both devices are USB-C charged.

Are the FireBoard probes replaceable?

The Pulse uses a proprietary probe that ships with the unit. Replacement probes are available direct from FireBoard if the original fails after extended use. Reach out to us on 0434 010 411 if you need a replacement and we will source it.

The Spark's probe is fixed to the unit and not separately replaceable. If the probe fails, the unit goes through warranty support.
