    Why It Is Different

Why the Pyralit Hero Unit Is Built Differently

Most chimney starters are made from galvanised or painted mild steel. Within a few uses, the coatings burn off. They were never designed for repeated high-heat ignition cycles, and rust starts forming within months. Lower-grade steel chimneys typically show coating breakdown and surface corrosion inside the first year.

The Pyralit Hero Unit is built from 316 marine-grade stainless steel throughout. The same alloy specified in hospitals, food processing, and marine environments. No coating to burn off. No zinc. No rust. Clean heat from the first light to the hundredth.

After 40 to 50 ignition cycles in our own testing across a Large Big Green Egg, a PK Grill, and a Weber Kettle (covering both lump charcoal and briquettes, high-heat pizza cooks and low-and-slow brisket sessions) we have seen zero warping, flaking, or surface degradation. With quality lump charcoal, cooking-ready coals consistently land at around 9 minutes.

    What Pyralit Owners Are Saying

    Game changer.

Grabbed a Pyralit ignition unit at the same time and that alone was worth it. Getting coals going used to be the biggest pain before I even started cooking. Now I'm up and running in minutes. Game changer.

    First time, every time.

Grabbed the Pyralit ignition unit and firestarters from BBQ Republic when I was in the showroom. The Pyralit stuff is great for the Big Green Egg, cleaner than what I was using before and lights up first time, every time.

    What Is Included

1 × Pyralit Hero Ignition Unit

316 marine-grade stainless steel construction with patented airflow design. Lights lump charcoal or briquettes in under 10 minutes.

    1 × Hardwood Assist Handle

Optional solid hardwood handle for easier carrying and additional heat separation when transferring lit coals.

    Two Ways to Use It

    Choose Your Configuration

Every Pyralit Hero Unit ships with the assist handle included. You choose how to run it.

    Handle-Free Mode

Clean, streamlined profile. No protruding parts. Pairs with your own heat-resistant gloves when transferring lit coals. Best for users who already have BBQ gloves and want the most compact footprint.

    Assist Handle Mode

Solid hardwood handle attached for easier carrying and added heat separation when lifting a full load of lit charcoal. Best for frequent or high-volume cooks where transfer happens multiple times per session.

Both options use the same 316 stainless construction and deliver identical ignition performance.

    How To Use

Lighting the Pyralit in 4 Steps

    1. Fill the base with your preferred charcoal. We recommend high-quality lump charcoal for the fastest ignition.
    2. Light from below using a natural firestarter. Pyralit Organic Firestarters are designed for this and pair perfectly.
    3. Allow airflow to build heat through the chimney design. No fanning, no blowing required.
    4. In under 10 minutes, your charcoal is at cooking temperature. Transfer to your grill, kamado, or smoker.
Do not use lighter fluid, kerosene, or chemical accelerants. The Pyralit lights cleanly with natural firestarters in under 10 minutes. Accelerants compromise the cooking environment, can damage the patented airflow design, and are simply not necessary.

    Common Questions

    Pyralit Hero Ignition Unit FAQs

Questions we get asked most before purchase. Not covered here? Call us or visit the showroom.

Will the Pyralit work with my Big Green Egg, Weber kettle, or offset smoker?
Yes. The Pyralit Hero Ignition Unit is a standalone charcoal starter compatible with any charcoal-based cooker. It works with kamados (Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe), kettle grills (Weber, PK), offset smokers, drum smokers, and open-fire grates. It is not specific to any brand or grill size.
How does the Pyralit compare to a standard chimney starter?
A standard chimney starter is typically galvanised or painted mild steel that warps, rusts, and burns off coatings within a few uses. The Pyralit is built from 316 marine-grade stainless steel with no coatings, lights faster (under 10 minutes), and is backed by a lifetime warranty. Per cook, over a lifetime, it is the cheaper option.
Does lump charcoal work better than briquettes?
Lump charcoal typically ignites faster due to lower density and larger surface area. Briquettes take slightly longer but ignite reliably and predictably. Both work effectively in the Hero Unit. For consistent results, we recommend high-quality lump charcoal.
Why is 316 marine-grade stainless better than standard stainless?
316 contains molybdenum, which improves resistance to heat and moisture corrosion compared to 304 stainless. It is the grade specified for marine environments, food processing, and medical equipment where standard stainless is not sufficient. It will not rust, even in coastal Australian conditions.
What maintenance does the Pyralit need?
Brush off loose ash after cooling. The 316 stainless steel construction requires no oiling, coating, or protective treatment. Outdoor storage is fine year-round.
Is heat protection needed when transferring lit coals?
The included hardwood assist handle provides heat separation during coal transfer. For users running it in handle-free mode, heat-resistant BBQ gloves are recommended when moving the unit with a full load of lit charcoal.
Can I see the Pyralit before I buy?
Yes. The Pyralit Hero Ignition Unit is on display at our Wetherill Park showroom in Sydney. Pyralit is sold online-only direct from the brand, so visiting BBQ Republic is the only way to handle one in person before committing. Open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 2pm.
Does the Pyralit ship outside Sydney?
Yes, BBQ Republic ships Pyralit Australia-wide. Standard shipping rates apply at checkout. Sydney metro orders qualify for fast metro delivery or same-day pickup from our Wetherill Park showroom.
