    Pyralit Catch Plate

1.5mm 316 marine-grade stainless. The official base plate for the Pyralit Hero Ignition Unit.

The Pyralit Catch Plate is the official base plate for the Pyralit Hero Ignition Unit. Precision-cut in an octagonal profile from 1.5mm 316 marine-grade stainless steel, it sits directly beneath the ignition unit and catches every piece of ash and ember before it reaches your grill grate, deck, or patio surface.

It slides into place in seconds with no tools required. It does not interrupt airflow or affect ignition performance. When the cook is done, brush or rinse it clean and it is ready for the next session.

    Why It Earns Its Place

What the Catch Plate Actually Does

Most people who use the Pyralit Hero Ignition Unit add the catch plate within the first few cooks for one simple reason: it keeps the area underneath the ignition unit clean without any extra effort.

As the firestarter burns and charcoal lights, ash and small embers fall away from the base. Without a catch plate, that debris lands directly on your grill grate, firebox floor, or whatever surface the unit is resting on. Over multiple cooks it accumulates, creates mess, and can affect airflow inside the firebox.

The catch plate intercepts all of that. It sits flush beneath the ignition unit, collects the fallout, and keeps your cooking environment exactly the way you set it up.

After 40 to 50 cooks running the Pyralit Ignition Unit and Catch Plate combination across Big Green Egg kamados and Weber kettles, the second use case became obvious: the catch plate is also a heat-safe landing surface for the hot ignition unit after charcoal transfer. Once coals are poured into the grill, the unit is still extremely hot and needs somewhere to cool. The catch plate provides that surface, rather than risking damage by setting a hot 316 stainless unit directly on stone, concrete, deck timber, or metal shelving.

    Designed To Pair

Why Pair It With the Hero Ignition Unit

    Pyralit Hero Ignition Unit

316 marine-grade stainless. Australian-made. Lights charcoal in under 10 minutes. The catch plate is sized and profiled to match its footprint exactly.

    View Hero Unit

The catch plate's octagonal 27cm profile is precision-cut to match the ignition unit footprint. The two pieces sit flush together as a single system rather than reading as a generic accessory bolted on.

    Compatible Surfaces

    Where You Can Use It

The catch plate is rated for any heat-safe surface. It is not designed to make combustible surfaces (timber decking, plastic, etc.) safe for ignition. The Pyralit system always requires a heat-safe primary surface as the first protection layer.

    Stone and concrete patios
Metal grill grates and side shelves
    Ceramic kamado surfaces
    Brick and pavers
    Stainless steel BBQ benches
    Outdoor kitchen prep zones
    How To Use

    Setup in 4 Steps

    1. Place the Catch Plate on a heat-safe surface (stone, concrete, metal grate, or paver).
    2. Set the Pyralit Hero Ignition Unit directly on top.
    3. Light your firestarter and ignite the charcoal as normal. The plate sits beneath without affecting airflow.
    4. Once coals are transferred to your grill, the catch plate becomes the dedicated landing surface for the hot ignition unit while it cools. After cooling, brush or rinse the plate clean. Ready for the next cook.

    Common Questions

    Pyralit Catch Plate FAQs

Questions we get asked most before purchase. Not covered here? Call us or visit the showroom.

What does the Pyralit Catch Plate actually do?
It sits directly beneath the Pyralit Hero Ignition Unit and intercepts ash, ember fragments, and charcoal debris that fall during ignition before they land on your grill grate, firebox floor, or deck surface. After 40 to 50 cooks of testing, we have found a second key use: it also acts as a heat-safe landing surface for the hot ignition unit after charcoal transfer.
Does the catch plate come included with the Pyralit Hero Ignition Unit?
No. The catch plate is sold separately at $25. It is an optional accessory designed to pair with the Hero Ignition Unit. The unit functions without the catch plate, but most users add it after their first few cooks once they realise how much ash and debris falls during the ignition process.
Does the catch plate restrict airflow or affect how the ignition unit lights charcoal?
No. The catch plate sits beneath the ignition unit and does not contact or cover any airflow openings. The Pyralit Hero Ignition Unit draws air through its specific geometry to accelerate ignition. The catch plate sits below the base and does not interrupt this airflow path. Ignition performance is identical with or without the catch plate.
What surfaces can I use the catch plate on?
Any heat-safe surface (concrete, stone, metal grill grates, ceramic surfaces, and patio pavers). The 316 stainless steel construction tolerates the heat generated during ignition without degrading or staining the surface beneath. Do not use on timber decking, plastic, or other combustible surfaces, even with the catch plate. The Pyralit system requires a heat-safe primary surface as the first protection layer.
How do I clean the catch plate between cooks?
Allow to cool completely after each use (never clean a hot catch plate with cold water). Once cool, brush out accumulated ash with a dry brush or rinse under water. The 316 stainless steel does not rust from water exposure and requires no drying treatment. For stubborn ash residue, soak briefly in water to loosen before brushing. No detergent or special cleaning products required.
Why is 316 marine-grade stainless used for a catch plate?
The catch plate sits directly beneath the ignition unit during the hottest phase of every cook. It is exposed to the highest ash alkalinity (freshly burned charcoal ash is strongly alkaline and corrodes lower-grade metals quickly), the most direct heat, and sustained outdoor moisture. 316 stainless handles all three without any degradation. Using a lower-grade stainless or mild steel would result in rust formation at the ash-contact points within a season, defeating the purpose of an accessory designed as a lifetime companion to the ignition unit.
Is the catch plate compatible with other ignition systems, or only Pyralit?
The catch plate is sized and profiled specifically for the Pyralit Hero Ignition Unit's footprint. While it will physically sit beneath other chimney starters, the precise sizing match to the Pyralit unit is what makes it work as a cohesive system. For other chimney starters, a generic ash tray or heat-resistant surface serves a similar purpose.
