Best Gas Grills for Australian Conditions (2026 Guide)

Broil King 590 Pro

Most gas grill advice comes from America. Different climate. Different brands. Different conditions.

Australia's intense UV, coastal salt air, and year-round outdoor cooking culture demand grills built to last. After years of selling and cooking on gas grills in Sydney, we know what works in Australian conditions and what doesn't.

This guide covers the gas grills we stock at our Wetherill Park showroom: Coleman (reliable, proven performers) and Broil King (premium, professional-grade). Both brands are built for Australian conditions. The right choice depends on your budget and how seriously you take grilling.

The Honest Take

Both brands work exceptionally well in Australian conditions. We cook on Coleman regularly in our showroom and the customer feedback on Broil King has been outstanding.

Coleman is the smart value choice for most Australian families. Reliable, proven, affordable. Does everything you need without premium pricing.

Broil King is the step-up choice for people who take grilling seriously. You pay more upfront but the build quality justifies the price if you grill frequently and plan to keep it long-term.

No wrong choice here. The right grill is the one that fits your budget and how often you will actually use it.

What Makes Australian Conditions Different?

The Climate Challenge

UV intensity: Australia has some of the world's highest UV levels. Cheap plastic handles, knobs, and side tables degrade and crack within 2-3 years. You need UV-resistant materials or all-metal construction.

Heat: 40 degree summer days affect grill performance. Cheap grills struggle to maintain temperature when ambient temperature is that high. You need powerful burners and good insulation.

Coastal salt air: Live near the coast? Salt accelerates corrosion on cheap stainless steel. You need high-quality stainless (304-grade minimum) or porcelain-coated steel that resists rust.

Year-round cooking: Australians grill year-round, not just in summer. Your grill will get three to four times more use than in countries with seasonal grilling. Durability matters more here.

How We Cook

Outdoor living lifestyle: The grill often becomes the primary cooking appliance, not just weekend entertainment. Reliability and ease of use matter more than novelty features.

Typical cuts: Thick steaks, lamb chops, sausages, whole chickens. You need consistent heat and good searing capability.

Entertaining culture: Aussies grill for groups. Cooking surface size matters. Too small and you're stuck doing multiple batches.

Must-Haves for Australian Conditions

  • Quality stainless steel or porcelain-coated materials
  • Powerful burners for the size of the grill (see our burner output comparison below)
  • UV-resistant or metal construction
  • Good warranty and local support
  • Proven durability (not first-year models)

Both Coleman and Broil King meet these requirements. The difference is price point and how seriously you take grilling.

Why Broil King Is Worth the Premium

  • Commercial-grade construction built like restaurant equipment

Features That Matter in Australian Conditions

Burner Output (MJ/h)

On a 40 degree summer day, ambient temperature makes it harder for grills to reach target cooking temperature. More burner output helps a grill get back up to heat when it's hot outside.

Coleman vs Broil King: Burner Output Compared

Here's every grill in this guide side by side, all in MJ/h:

Grill Main burners Side / wok / rotisserie Total
Coleman Revolution 2 Burner 27 — 27
Coleman Revolution 4 Burner with Side Burner 41.2 14.3 side 55.5
Coleman Revolution Dual Fuel — charcoal lighting burner 46.2
Coleman Pro Series 5-Burner — 11.9 wok 86.9
Broil King Baron 490 IRX Shadow 42.2 10.6 side + 15.8 rotisserie 68.6
Broil King Baron 590 IRX Shadow 47.5 10.6 side + 15.8 rotisserie 73.9
Broil King Baron 590i Pro IR Shadow outdoor kitchen* 47.5 10.6 infrared side + 15.8 rotisserie 73.9
Broil King Regal Q590 Pro 58.0 13.7 side + 15.8 rotisserie 87.5
Broil King Regal Q690 Pro 63.3 13.7 side + 15.8 rotisserie 92.8
Broil King Imperial QS590 BI 58.0 13.7 side + 15.8 rotisserie 87.5
Broil King Imperial QS690 BI 63.3 13.7 side + 15.8 rotisserie 92.8

Higher numbers aren't automatically better: heat retention and burner design matter just as much as raw output. Coleman figures are Coleman's own; the Dual Fuel (46.2 MJ/h) and Pro Series 5 (86.9 MJ/h total, 11.9 MJ/h wok) are rated without a main-burner split. Broil King figures are converted from Broil King Australia's published ratings, and totals add up every burner. *The 590i outdoor kitchen uses the figures Broil King Australia publishes for the matching Baron 590 IR Shadow built-in grill head.

The reality: Both brands deliver excellent power. Coleman's Pro 5 has a total output of 86.9 MJ/h, close to the Regal Q590 Pro and Imperial QS590 BI (87.5 MJ/h). Either brand has more than enough power for Australian conditions.

Stainless Steel Quality

Coastal salt air corrodes cheap stainless steel. Queensland and NSW coast dwellers know this well : cheap BBQs rust within 2-3 years.

304-grade (preferred): Excellent corrosion resistance, used in marine applications.
430-grade (adequate): Budget-friendly, acceptable for non-coastal areas.
Chrome-plated (avoid): Flakes and rusts in coastal areas.

Coleman: 304 stainless steel burners on the Revolution 2 Burner and Pro Series 5 (Coleman cites exceptional corrosion resistance in harsh Australian conditions for the Pro Series 5 burners), plus porcelain-enamel coated cast-iron cooking grates on the Pro Series 5.

Broil King: Regal and Imperial use stainless steel construction with solid or cast stainless grids. The Baron pairs a rust-resistant cast aluminium cookbox with stainless burners, stainless grids and a stainless Flav-R-Wave.

Both brands handle coastal conditions well. For beachside properties, the stainless Regal and Imperial are the ones we'd point you to.

UV Resistance

Australia's UV index regularly hits 11+ in summer. Cheap plastic handles, knobs, and side tables become brittle and crack within 2-3 years.

Coleman: Coleman doesn't publish UV-resistance details. The Pro Series 5 has a die-cast aluminium burner box and a double-walled porcelain-enamel lid; come and check the finish in person in our showroom.

Broil King: Regal and Imperial use stainless steel construction; the Baron has a cast aluminium cookbox in a matte-black Shadow finish. All are built for years of regular use outdoors.

Warranty and Local Support

Coleman: 5-year warranty, with local warranty support through BBQ Republic.

Broil King: Strong manufacturer warranty. We provide full warranty support at BBQ Republic.

Both brands offer genuine Australian warranty support. Avoid grey-import or US-only brands : getting parts is a nightmare.

Common Question

What About Other Brands?

If you already own a gas grill you love, there is nothing wrong with that. We stock Coleman and Broil King because we think they suit Australian conditions well. Coleman's Flare-Free Technology helps reduce flare-ups, and Broil King's Dual-Tube burners give even heat with a rotisserie included. Come and compare them side by side in our Wetherill Park showroom.

Size Guide for Australian Backyards

Cooking Surface Recommendations

2 people: Coleman 2-burner (2,968 cm²) is perfect
3-4 people: Coleman 4-burner (4,387 cm²) or Broil King Regal Q590
5-6 people: Coleman Pro 5 (5,174 cm²), Broil King Baron 490 or Broil King Regal Q690
Regular entertaining (8+ people): Coleman Pro 5, Broil King Baron 590 or Broil King dual cookbox models

Space Considerations

Typical Australian backyard: Allow minimum 1m clearance behind and on the sides for safety and ease of use.

Undercover areas: Check clearance above the grill. Most need 1.2-1.5m overhead clearance.

Balconies: Check building restrictions. Many buildings ban charcoal but allow gas. Coleman 2-burner is balcony-friendly.

Coleman vs Broil King: Size Comparison

Model Cooking Surface Best For
Coleman 2-Burner 2,968 cm² 2 to 3 people
Coleman 4-Burner 4,387 cm² 4 to 6 people
Coleman Dual Fuel 4,258 cm² (gas) 4 to 5 people
Coleman Pro 5-Burner 5,174 cm² 6 to 8+ people
Broil King Baron 490 IRX Shadow 4,060 cm² 4 to 6 people
Broil King Baron 590 IRX Shadow 5,030 cm² 6 to 8+ people
Broil King Baron 590i Pro IR Shadow outdoor kitchen 3,230 cm² (primary) 4 to 6 people
Broil King Regal Q590 Pro 6,420 cm² 4 to 6 people
Broil King Regal Q690 Pro 4,840 cm² 6 to 8+ people

Cost of Ownership in Australia

Coleman range: entry-level to mid-range. Broil King range: mid-range (Baron) to premium (Regal and Imperial). The Baron narrows the gap, while the Regal and Imperial cost considerably more than Coleman (see each product page for current pricing). Whether it is worth it depends on how seriously you take grilling and how long you plan to keep it.

If you grill 2-3+ times per week and plan to keep it 10-15+ years, Broil King's extra cost is spread over many years of use, which is reasonable for professional-grade equipment. If you grill once a week or are not sure you will stick with it, Coleman is the smarter value.

The extra you pay for Broil King buys you commercial-grade construction, better heat distribution, included rotisserie, LED lighting, and a build made for years of regular use.

Common Questions

Which gas grill is best for Australian conditions?

Both Coleman and Broil King are well-suited to Australian conditions. Coleman is the right choice for most families: reliable, proven and affordable, with Flare-Free Technology and double stacked cooking grates across the Revolution range. Broil King is the step-up option, with Dual-Tube burners for even heat, stainless steel construction on the Regal and Imperial, and a strong manufacturer warranty (see each product page for details). BBQ Republic stocks both brands at its Wetherill Park showroom in Sydney.

What is the difference between Coleman and Broil King gas grills?

Coleman grills sit in the entry-level to mid-range price bracket and offer reliable everyday performance, with Flare-Free Technology and double stacked cooking grates across the Revolution range. Broil King grills run from the more affordable Baron range to the premium Regal and Imperial ranges, with Dual-Tube burners, stainless steel cooking grids and an included rotisserie; the Regal and Imperial add stainless steel construction. Coleman is the smart value choice. Broil King is the step-up choice for serious grillers.

Do gas grills rust in coastal Australian conditions?

Cheap grills with chrome-plated grates or low-grade stainless steel will rust in coastal salt air within two to three years. Coleman uses 304 stainless steel burners on the Revolution 2 Burner and Pro Series 5, and the Pro Series 5 adds porcelain-enamel coated cast-iron cooking grates. Broil King's Regal and Imperial use stainless steel construction with solid or cast stainless cooking grids, and the Baron pairs a rust-resistant cast aluminium cookbox with stainless burners and grids. Both brands are suitable for coastal Australian conditions.

What is Coleman Flare-Free Technology?

Coleman's Flare-Free Technology captures and redirects fats and grease to eliminate flare-ups and hot spots and prevent burnt or overcooked food. Coleman lists it on the Revolution 2 Burner, Revolution 4 Burner and Revolution Dual Fuel, all stocked at BBQ Republic.

Is Broil King worth the premium over Coleman?

Broil King is worth the premium if you grill three or more times a week, want professional-grade performance, and plan to keep the grill for many years. The build quality, Dual-Tube burners, included rotisserie, and LED lighting justify the higher price for serious grillers. If you grill once a week or are not sure you will stick with grilling long-term, Coleman is the smarter value choice. The Baron range is the more affordable way into Broil King.

Where can I see Coleman and Broil King grills in person in Sydney?

All Coleman and Broil King models are on display at BBQ Republic's Wetherill Park showroom at 5 Vicars Place, Wetherill Park, Sydney. Free Sydney metro delivery on all gas grills. What size gas grill do I need for my Australian backyard?

For two people, the Coleman Revolution 2-Burner at 2,968 cm² is ideal. For three to four people, the Coleman Revolution 4-Burner at 4,387 cm² or Broil King Regal Q590 at 6,420 cm² suit. For five to six people, the Coleman Pro Series 5 at 5,174 cm² (with an 11.9 MJ/h wok burner), Broil King Baron 490 at 4,060 cm² or Broil King Regal Q690 work well.
