The smaller of the two, sized for regular backyards and everyday cooks. Same charcoal performance and digital control as the 1150, just less capacity. Choose this if you cook for 4 to 6 people most of the time and want serious charcoal kit without giving up the patio to it.

Digital Charcoal vs Pellet vs Ceramic

Buy Masterbuilt If

You want real charcoal flavour with set-and-forget convenience

Digital charcoal gives you the flavour profile of a kamado with the ease of a pellet smoker. App control, gravity-fed hopper, and the high-heat searing capacity pellet rigs cannot match. The closest thing to a hands-off charcoal cook.

Buy Pellet If

You prefer clean wood smoke and digital convenience

Pellet smokers (Yoder, GMG, Traeger) give you clean hardwood smoke profiles with full app control, but struggle to sear at high heat. Best for low-and-slow specialists who do not need 371°C steakhouse temps.

Buy Ceramic If

You want maximum versatility and are willing to learn manual control

Big Green Egg and other ceramic kamados give the widest temperature range and longest fuel efficiency in the category, but require hands-on vent management rather than app control. The lifetime cooker for serious enthusiasts.

Comparison reflects publicly available specs and our own hands-on experience cooking across the three categories. Pricing reflects current Australian RRP at time of writing. Brand references are owned by their respective companies and are not stocked by BBQ Republic unless otherwise stated.

Questions Buyers Actually Ask

Masterbuilt FAQ

The questions buyers researching a $1,599 to $2,099 digital charcoal smoker call us about. Cannot find what you need? Call 0434 010 411.

How does the gravity-fed charcoal system actually work?

The Masterbuilt Gravity Series uses a tall vertical hopper that holds your lump charcoal or briquettes. As charcoal at the bottom burns, gravity feeds fresh fuel down automatically.

A digital fan controlled by the onboard computer regulates airflow precisely to hit your target temperature. Fill the hopper once, set a temp on the app, and walk away. The system maintains temperature for up to 18 hours on the Gravity 600 and 15 hours on the Gravity 1150 without any manual intervention.

That is the magic: real charcoal flavour with pellet-smoker convenience.

What can the Masterbuilt app actually do?

The free Masterbuilt app on iOS and Android lets you set the target chamber temperature, monitor the actual temperature in real time, track meat probe temperatures, and set cook timers with push alerts.

The practical use case: you start a brisket at 9pm, set the chamber to 110°C and the meat target probe to 95°C, then go to bed. The app wakes you when the brisket hits temp. No staying up to babysit a fire.

The system uses WiFi for primary connection (Bluetooth as fallback) and works reliably across typical backyard distances from the BBQ to the house.

What is the difference between the Gravity 600 and 1150?

Both share the same engineering: gravity-fed hopper, digital fan control, app integration, 107°C to 371°C temperature range. The difference is cooking capacity.

Gravity Series 600: 600 sq in cooking space, fits 5 racks of ribs or 10 whole chickens. Compact footprint for regular backyards. From $1,599.

Gravity Series 1150: Nearly double at 1,150 sq in, fits 12 racks of ribs or 19 whole chickens. Built for regular entertainers and large cooks. From $2,099.

The 600 burns 18 hours on a hopper fill versus 15 hours on the 1150 because the smaller chamber needs less fuel to maintain temp.

What charcoal works best in a Gravity Series?

Both lump charcoal and briquettes work well. The system is designed to handle either.

Lump charcoal burns hotter and faster with cleaner smoke flavour. Better for high-heat sears and shorter cooks. Pair it with Argie Grillz Argentine Lump Charcoal for the best results.

Briquettes burn longer and more evenly at lower temperatures. Better for overnight low-and-slow cooks where you want maximum unattended burn time.

You can also add wood chunks on top of the charcoal in the hopper for stronger smoke flavour profiles.

What is the warranty on Masterbuilt Gravity Series?

Every Masterbuilt Gravity Series carries a 2-year manufacturer warranty on parts and workmanship when purchased through an authorised dealer.

BBQ Republic is an authorised Masterbuilt dealer, which means we handle warranty claims on your behalf rather than sending you to chase Masterbuilt direct. Replacement digital controllers, fans, hopper components and grates are all in our supply chain.

Your warranty is valid from day one of purchase and we keep your serial number on file.

How does Masterbuilt compare to a Big Green Egg or pellet smoker?

Three different categories with different strengths:

Masterbuilt Digital Charcoal: Real charcoal flavour with set-and-forget app control. Excellent for buyers who want hands-off charcoal cooking without learning kamado vent management.

Pellet Smoker (Yoder, GMG, Traeger): Clean wood smoke flavour with digital convenience. Struggles to sear past 260°C. Best for low-and-slow specialists.

Big Green Egg or other ceramic kamado: Widest temperature range, longest fuel efficiency, and most versatile cooker in the category. Requires hands-on vent management rather than app control. Lifetime cooker for serious enthusiasts.

If you want the easiest path to real charcoal flavour, the Masterbuilt is the right call. Visit our Wetherill Park showroom and see all three categories side by side.

Do you deliver and install Masterbuilt across Sydney?

Yes. Free Sydney metro delivery and full installation on every Masterbuilt we sell. Martin personally delivers and installs each unit, assembles on site, fills the hopper for your first cook, walks you through the app pairing, and answers any questions before leaving you ready to cook.

No flat-pack. No courier. No leaving a $1,599+ BBQ on your driveway in pieces. For interstate orders, standard freight rates apply and we provide phone support for self-install.

Can I see the Gravity Series in person before buying?

Yes. Both the Gravity Series 600 and 1150 are on permanent display at our Wetherill Park showroom alongside Yoder pellet smokers, Big Green Egg kamados, Broil King gas BBQs and the rest of our range. The best way to compare digital charcoal against pellet and ceramic in person.
