Traeger vs Masterbuilt vs Yoder: Which Smoker Fits Your Cooking Style?

Traeger vs Masterbuilt vs Yoder: Which Smoker Fits Your Cooking Style?

We're one of the few places in Sydney where you can stand in front of all three of these at once, so this comparison comes up in the showroom constantly. Each one solves the same basic problem, consistent, set-and-forget cooking, with a completely different fuel and price approach.

The Three at a Glance

Traeger ($1,599.95 to $3,999.95): Wood pellets, electronic auger feed, WiFIRE app control. The most accessible entry point and the widest range of dedicated smoke wood flavours.

Masterbuilt Gravity Series ($1,550): Real lump charcoal or briquettes, gravity-fed hopper, DigitalFan temperature control. Genuine charcoal flavour with app-based convenience and a higher maximum temperature for searing.

Yoder YS640s ($6,099 and up): Wood pellets, 10-gauge steel construction, Fireboard-based control, and direct flame grilling that neither of the other two offers. Built to a commercial standard with a lifetime cooking chamber warranty.

Fuel Philosophy

Traeger and Yoder both burn wood pellets, but the similarity mostly ends there. Masterbuilt is the outlier of the three, burning actual charcoal rather than compressed wood, which changes both the flavour and the day-to-day handling: charcoal loading and ash management versus simply topping up a pellet hopper.

Price and Build Quality Ladder

There's a clear ladder here. The Masterbuilt Gravity Series 1150 at $1,550 and the Traeger Pro 575 ($1,599.95) sit closest together on price and are the most accessible entry points into set-and-forget smoking. The Traeger Woodridge Pro ($2,399) and Ironwood XL ($3,999.95) close some of the feature gap without approaching Yoder pricing. The Yoder YS640s, from $6,099 to $9,299 depending on cart configuration, is in a different category entirely, justified by 10-gauge steel construction, a lifetime cooking chamber warranty, and direct flame grilling.

Temperature Ceiling and Searing

This is where the three separate most clearly. Traeger tops out around 260°C across the range, using radiant heat off a baffle with no direct flame contact. The Masterbuilt Gravity Series reaches 371°C, hot enough for a proper sear on its cast iron grates. The Yoder YS640s goes further still: its Variable Displacement Damper opens for direct flame access at temperatures exceeding 700°F (roughly 370°C) at the grate, genuinely replacing both a smoker and a hot grill in one machine. If a hard sear matters to your cooking, Traeger is the weakest of the three at it, Masterbuilt is a real step up, and Yoder is the only one built specifically to do both jobs on one cooker.

Technology and App Control

All three connect to an app. Traeger's WiFIRE is the most polished for a first-time buyer, with Alexa integration and a simple interface. The Masterbuilt app monitors up to 4 meat probes and controls the DigitalFan directly. Yoder's Fireboard-based control gives the deepest data of the three: real-time temperature graphing across the whole cook and wireless probe monitoring, which matters more the more seriously you take long, competition-style cooks. None of the three require the app to actually cook. All three work fine from the unit's own panel.

Warranty Across the Three

Traeger carries a 3-year warranty across the range. The Masterbuilt Gravity Series carries a 2-year warranty. The Yoder YS640s carries a lifetime warranty on the cooking chamber body specifically, with standard cover on electronics and moving parts. As an authorised dealer for all three brands, we handle warranty claims directly rather than sending you overseas or to a call centre.

Which Should You Buy?

Want real charcoal flavour and don't mind loading fuel by hand: Masterbuilt Gravity Series.

Want the widest range of dedicated wood smoke flavours at the most accessible price: Traeger.

Cook constantly, want commercial-grade construction and direct flame searing, and the budget allows it: Yoder YS640s.

All three are on the floor at Wetherill Park. Come compare them properly before deciding. We'll give you our honest read on which one matches how you actually cook, not just whichever has the best margin for us.
