Why EGG Mates Make the Nest Setup Complete
An EGG in a Nest is a self-contained cooker, but it gives you nowhere to put anything while you are working at it. Every time you lift the dome, open a vent, or probe the meat, you need somewhere to rest things. EGG Mates solve this by extending the working area on both sides of the EGG directly at the cooker. Probe thermometer receiver, seasoning rubs, resting board, tongs, plate for the cook. All of it sits within arm's reach rather than on a separate table several steps away. Sustainably Harvested Acacia Wood
Each EGG Mate is made from sustainably sourced acacia hardwood, the same timber used across the BGE table and handle range. Acacia is a dense, durable tropical hardwood that handles outdoor conditions well and develops a warm patina over time with regular oiling. Not a lightweight softwood shelf. This is a properly built timber surface built to last.

Mortise and Tenon Joinery
The EGG Mates are constructed with mortise and tenon joints throughout, the same joinery method used in quality furniture and cabinet making. Mortise and tenon joints are mechanically strong and move with the wood as it expands and contracts with temperature and humidity changes outdoors, without loosening or cracking the way glued or dowelled joints can.

No Visible Screws from Above
The top surface of each EGG Mate is clean with no visible fixings. Fasteners are concealed beneath the surface, so the working area you use during every cook presents as a clean, uninterrupted timber panel rather than a hardware-visible shelf. Consistent with the finish standard of the BGE Acacia Table.

UV-Stabilised Oil Finish
The timber is finished with a light protective oil coating that includes UV stabilisers to slow weathering from sun exposure. The finish is matched to the BGE acacia handle and Acacia Table, so if you have either of those on your setup, the EGG Mates integrate visually without any mismatch in tone or sheen.

EGG Mates require the EGG to be in a Nest. The shelves attach to the Nest frame on either side of the EGG. They are not compatible with table or built-in setups, as the table already provides integrated side shelf space. If your EGG is in a table, EGG Mates are not the right accessory for your configuration.

EGG Mates require assembly before fitting to the Nest. Big Green Egg provides both a written assembly manual and a video walkthrough for the process. Assembly is straightforward and requires no specialist tools. The mortise and tenon construction means the joints fit together positively without requiring force or adhesive.
How do I maintain the acacia wood finish?
Acacia wood benefits from periodic re-oiling, particularly after extended outdoor exposure or wet-weather seasons. Apply a food-safe timber oil or teak oil with a cloth every few months, or whenever the surface begins to look dry or grey. This restores the warm tone of the acacia and maintains the UV protection. Store under an EGG cover when not in use to extend the finish life between oil treatments.
