The only Barbeques Galore locations still trading are the 27 independently run franchise stores, and their long-term future beyond the current transition period isn't guaranteed either. What Actually Happened to Barbeques Galore

The BBQG Group, owner of the Barbeques Galore brand, was placed into voluntary administration on 12 February 2026, with Grant Thornton appointed as Voluntary Administrators and Ankura appointed as Receivers and Managers running the business day to day. A Deed of Company Arrangement was put to creditors and reportedly won strong support, but in mid-June 2026 the administrators announced the deal couldn't proceed, citing an inability to reach commercial trading terms with suppliers. The administrators became liquidators of the BBQG Group from 16 June 2026.

Of the 89 stores trading under the Barbeques Galore banner at that point, 62 were company-owned and have since gone through a controlled closure process. The remaining 27 are independently run franchise stores that kept trading under transitional arrangements while the wind-down was managed, and they're now the only Barbeques Galore locations still open. What happens to those franchise stores beyond the current transition period is still being worked through by the receivers, not something an outside retailer like us would have visibility on.

What Happens to Gift Cards and Orders

During the administration and receivership period, the official customer guidance from the receivers was that gift cards would still be honoured, but only under a top-up condition: for every $1 of gift card credit redeemed, the holder had to spend an extra $2 on a new purchase. A $50 gift card, for example, required a total purchase of $150, with $100 of that paid on top of the card. That's a materially different deal to redeeming a gift card like cash, and it's worth knowing if you're assuming your full balance is available to spend.

Now that the 62 company-owned stores have closed, that redemption option is no longer available at those locations. If you're still holding a card, your best options are checking directly with one of the remaining franchise stores to see whether they'll honour it under their own arrangement, or contacting the receivers for the current position rather than assuming either way.
