Why Palmyra Bristles Are Safer Than Metal Wire Bristles

Traditional grill brushes use metal wire bristles (typically steel or brass) twisted into the brush head. These bristles are effective at removing stuck-on food and carbon deposits, but they pose a safety risk.

Metal wire bristles can break off during cleaning and become embedded in grill grates. When you cook food on the grates during the next use, the broken bristle can transfer to the food and be ingested. Ingested metal bristles can pierce the digestive tract and cause serious internal injuries requiring surgery.

This is not a theoretical risk. Hospitals treat dozens of wire bristle ingestion cases each year, and some cases result in permanent injury or death. The risk is well-documented in medical literature.

Palmyra bristles eliminate this risk. Palmyra is a natural fibre derived from the Palmyra palm tree. The fibres are heat-resistant up to 180°C and are stiff enough to scrub grill grates effectively. If a Palmyra fibre breaks off during cleaning, it will not cause the same internal damage as a metal wire bristle because the fibre is softer and biodegradable.

Palmyra bristles are not as aggressive as metal wire bristles for removing heavily carbonized deposits, but they are adequate for regular maintenance cleaning. For heavily soiled grates, pre-soak the grates or use a grill stone or scraper in addition to the Palmyra brush.

Care and Maintenance
