Which BGE Fuel and Starter Combination?

Two charcoal flavours, two starter options. The right combination depends on what you cook and how often you fire the Egg.

Choose Your Charcoal Profile

Oak & Hickory Lump Classic American Profile
8 kg Bag

The Egg's classic charcoal pairing. Oak and hickory burn hot and clean with a strong, traditional smoke flavour. The go-to for low-and-slow brisket, ribs, pork shoulder, and steakhouse-temperature steaks. Cut specifically for the BGE firebox.

Best for

Brisket, pork shoulder, beef ribs
Strong, traditional American BBQ smoke profile
High-heat searing up to 400°C+
Hot burn with minimal ash
8 kg Bag $60

Canadian Maple Lump Lighter Sweet Profile
9 kg Bag

A softer, slightly sweet smoke profile. Canadian maple lump burns cleaner and milder than oak or hickory. Better for pork, poultry, fish, vegetables and pizza where strong American BBQ smoke would overpower the dish. Same firebox-cut quality.

Best for

Pork, poultry, fish, vegetables
Subtle, sweet smoke profile
Pizza at 320°C with cleaner flavour
Burns slightly cooler, good for delicate cooks
9 kg Bag $60

BGE Oak & Hickory or Canadian Maple: which charcoal should I buy?

Depends on what you cook. Oak & Hickory is the classic Egg pairing for low-and-slow American BBQ: brisket, pork shoulder, beef ribs, plus high-heat steaks. Strong, traditional smoke profile that buyers expect.

Canadian Maple is the lighter alternative for pork, poultry, fish, vegetables and pizza where strong smoke would overpower the dish. Cleaner, slightly sweet profile. Burns slightly cooler too.

Most experienced Egg owners keep both bags in rotation. The price is the same so the only question is matching the charcoal to the cook.

Can I use any lump charcoal in my Big Green Egg?

Yes, but with caveats. The Egg will burn any quality lump charcoal, including premium third-party brands like Argie Grillz Argentine Lump Charcoal.

What to avoid: briquettes with binders, mass-market supermarket charcoal, and any charcoal infused with petroleum-based accelerants. These produce more ash, can flavour-taint the ceramic, and burn inconsistently in the Egg's airflow geometry.

BGE charcoal is cut to the right size for the firebox and dialled in for Egg airflow. Argie Grillz is the closest third-party performer we have tested. Avoid anything cheaper from a hardware store.

How long does an 8 kg bag of BGE charcoal last?

Highly dependent on cook style. Rough rules of thumb:

Low and slow (110°C to 135°C): an 8 kg bag fuels roughly 3 to 4 long cooks (12 to 18 hours each) before topping up.

High heat searing (260°C+): same bag fuels 6 to 8 cook sessions because you burn more aggressively.

Mixed everyday use: 4 to 6 weeks per bag for a regular weekend Egg cook. Active relighting between cooks (Egg charcoal is reusable until consumed) extends bag life considerably.

SpeediLight or EGGniter: which starter is right for me?

Frequency of use is the deciding factor.

SpeediLight ($10 for a 24 pack): ideal for casual and weekend Egg owners. 1 to 3 cubes per cook, no equipment, no maintenance. Roughly $0.40 to $1.25 per cook in consumables.

EGGniter ($110, refillable): ideal for weekly-and-up cookers. Pays back in roughly 10 to 12 months of regular use, then it is essentially free per cook (just butane refill cost). Faster ignition: 60 to 90 seconds vs 4 to 5 minutes for the cubes to fully catch.

Many owners keep both: SpeediLight for travel and outdoors, EGGniter as the daily driver at home.

What is the best technique for lighting BGE charcoal?

Single technique that works for both starters:

Fill the firebox with charcoal until the lump is at the level of the upper firebox holes. Heap the charcoal in the centre, not packed tight: airflow is critical.

With SpeediLight: tuck 1 to 3 cubes deep into the centre of the charcoal pile (not on top). Light all cubes with a long match or BBQ lighter. Leave the lid open with the bottom vent fully open. Wait 10 to 15 minutes until the charcoal around the cubes is glowing white-grey.

With EGGniter: hold the torch against the centre of the charcoal pile for 60 to 90 seconds. The lump will glow visibly under the torch. Same airflow setup.

Close the lid, dial the bottom vent to roughly half open and the daisy wheel on top to your target air mix. The Egg will climb to temperature predictably from there.

How often should I clean ash out of the firebox?

Every 4 to 6 cooks for most owners, or whenever you notice temperature climb is slower than usual or sustained low temp is unstable. Ash buildup chokes the bottom airflow holes and starves the fire of oxygen.

Method: wait until the Egg is completely cold, remove the cooking grate and firebox ring, then use the BGE ash tool (or a thin metal scraper) to push ash through the firegrate into the ash pan below. Empty the pan into a metal bin.

The unburnt lump that falls through is reusable: tip it back into the firebox for your next cook. Genuine cost savings over a year of weekly cooks.

Can I top up partially burnt charcoal with fresh lump?

Yes, and it is good practice. Egg charcoal that has been lit but not fully consumed will relight cleanly on the next cook.

Method: at the end of each cook, close all vents fully. The fire suffocates and leftover lump stops burning. Next cook, top up with fresh charcoal (heap on top of the existing partially-burnt lump), light the new layer normally with SpeediLight or the EGGniter.

This is the #1 thing that makes Egg charcoal more economical than other categories. A single 8 kg bag with disciplined vent management can stretch much further than the cooks-per-bag rough estimates above.
