How do I light a Big Green Egg?

The simplest way to light a Big Green Egg is with BGE SpeediLight natural firestarters. Place one or two starters in the charcoal, light them, and leave the lid open for 10 to 15 minutes until the charcoal is ashed over. The EGGniter is a butane charcoal starter that gets the Egg to temperature even faster. Never use lighter fluid or chemical firelighters in a Big Green Egg as they can affect the taste of your food.

How long does Big Green Egg charcoal last?

BGE Natural Lump Charcoal burns for many hours depending on temperature. At low and slow temperatures around 110 degrees, an 8kg bag can last through a 12 to 16 hour brisket cook. At high heat above 250 degrees it burns faster. One of the advantages of the Big Green Egg's ceramic construction is that unused charcoal can be extinguished by closing the vents and reused for the next cook.
