The Big Green Egg comes with more than most people realise. Every bundle we sell includes the convEGGtor, the Grid Gripper, and the Ash Tool as standard. A lot of new owners do not fully understand what they have, particularly the convEGGtor, which is the single most important accessory in the whole range and one that most people underuse for months after buying the egg.
Beyond what comes in the box, the accessory range is extensive. Some of it genuinely changes what the BGE can do. Some of it is nice to have but not essential. This guide is written from nine years of cooking on Big Green Egg to help you work out what to buy first, what to add later, and how to get the most out of what you already have.
We stock the full BGE accessories range at BBQ Republic, with everything on display in Wetherill Park. You can see the Big Green Egg range at our Sydney showroom in person before you buy.

What Comes Included: The Accessories You Already Have
Before buying anything, know what came with your BGE bundle. Every bundle we sell includes these three items as standard.
The convEGGtor: The Most Important Accessory on the Egg
The convEGGtor is a ceramic heat deflector that sits between the firebox and the cooking grid to convert your BGE from a direct heat grill into an indirect cooker. It is the accessory that makes low and slow smoking, roasting, baking, and pizza possible on the BGE. Without it, you are limited to direct grilling over the coals.
Every bundle we sell includes the convEGGtor as standard. But a significant number of new BGE owners do not know how to use it properly, or use it inconsistently and do not understand why their results vary.
The convEGGtor sits legs-up or legs-down depending on the cook. Legs up positions the deflector closer to the charcoal and creates more space above for the cooking grid and food. This is the configuration for most indirect cooks: brisket, pork shoulder, ribs, whole chickens, bread, and pizza. Legs down positions the deflector lower and is used for specific setups like two-zone cooking where you want a raised cooking area further from the heat.
The most common mistake new BGE owners make with the convEGGtor is treating it as an on/off switch between two cooking modes rather than understanding that its placement affects temperature distribution across the cooking surface. With the convEGGtor in place and the BGE set to 110 degrees, you have a genuinely capable low and slow smoker. At 250 degrees with the convEGGtor, you have an outstanding roasting oven. At full temperature with the pizza stone on top, you have a wood-fired oven that produces results most home cooks have never experienced before.
If you are not using your convEGGtor on most cooks, you are not getting close to what the BGE can do. Come into the showroom and we will walk you through the configurations.

Grid Gripper: Use It Every Time
The chrome-plated Grid Gripper is included with every BGE and is one of those accessories that earns its place every single cook. The cooking grid on a BGE gets extremely hot. Removing it barehanded to add the convEGGtor, rearrange food, or add wood chunks mid-cook is not practical. The Grid Gripper lets you lift and reposition the grid safely without tongs or improvised solutions. It sounds basic - but it is the accessory you reach for more than almost anything else on the grill.
Ash Tool: Essential for Every Clean
The Ash Tool is included with every BGE and is the correct tool for clearing ash from the firebox after a cook. The BGE's ceramic firebox retains ash between cooks, and if ash builds up it restricts airflow through the bottom vent, which directly affects your ability to reach and hold temperature.
A quick stir of the ash before each cook, letting the ash fall through to the ash drawer below, is a two-minute habit that keeps the BGE performing consistently. Regular ash clearing is the difference between a BGE that lights reliably and holds temperature easily, and one that fights you every time you try to get it up to heat.
What to Buy Next: The Accessories That Expand What Your BGE Can Do
Once you have mastered what came in the box, these are the accessories that make a genuine difference to what the BGE can do.
EGG Genius Temperature Controller: $430
The EGG Genius is a WiFi-enabled temperature controller that automates airflow management on the BGE. A fan unit connects to the bottom vent and regulates the amount of air reaching the coals to hold your target temperature. You set the temperature through the app, and the EGG Genius manages the fire from there. You monitor the cook from your phone.
I started using the EGG Genius for longer cooks and have found myself reaching for it more and more. The BGE is an exceptional low and slow cooker once you know how to manage the vents, but the learning curve on vent control for long overnight cooks is real. The EGG Genius removes that variable entirely. Set it, monitor it from the couch or from bed, and pull the brisket when the probe reads the right temperature.
For anyone doing serious long cooks, this is the accessory that makes the BGE competitive with a pellet smoker on convenience without sacrificing any of the charcoal flavour that makes the BGE worth cooking on in the first place. Additional meat probes ($55) and pit probes ($55) are available separately if you want to monitor multiple zones simultaneously.
Pizza and Baking Stone: $85
The BGE at high temperature with a pizza stone is one of the most underused cooking setups in the range and one of the best results you can get from the egg. The ceramic cooking environment retains and radiates heat in a way that produces a crust that a home oven cannot match.
The pizza stone sits on top of the convEGGtor with the BGE running at full heat. Allow 30 to 45 minutes for the stone to fully absorb the heat before cooking. A pizza on a properly preheated stone in a BGE running at 300 degrees produces results that will change how you think about what the egg can do. The same stone works for bread, flatbreads, and anything that benefits from a high-heat surface directly beneath the dough.
If you bought the BGE primarily for smoking and have not tried pizza yet, the stone is the first accessory to add. A Half Moon Pizza and Baking Stone ($65) is also available if you want the flexibility of using half the cooking surface for pizza and the other half simultaneously.
Rotisserie Large: $449
The BGE rotisserie takes a straightforward cook and makes it genuinely special. A roast chicken, a pork shoulder, a leg of lamb - anything that benefits from self-basting rotation comes off the rotisserie tender and evenly cooked in a way you cannot replicate with the cut sitting stationary on the grid.
The rotisserie works with the convEGGtor in place for indirect cooking. The rotation means fat bastes the meat continuously as it cooks. The result on a pork shoulder is one of the best things you can produce on the BGE: rendered fat, a proper crust on the outside, and meat that falls apart from the bone. For a Sunday roast or any occasion where you want results noticeably better than a standard oven roast, it earns its place.
Other Useful Accessories
Pizza Peel
$70 · If you are buying the pizza stone, buy this at the same time. Essential for loading pizza onto a 300 degree stone cleanly.
Cast Iron Dutch Oven
$140 · The BGE at 150 to 180 degrees with a Dutch oven inside is a slow cooker that outperforms most kitchen appliances. Lamb shanks, braised beef, pulled pork.
Cast Iron Grid
$80 · Retains heat more effectively than the standard stainless grid. Better searing contact for high-heat direct grilling and proper grill marks.
Stainless Steel Fire Bowl
From $165 · Integrated handles for clean ash removal, optimised airflow geometry for faster startups and more precise temperature control. Available for MiniMax, Medium, Large and XL.
rEGGulator Vent Cap
$100 · Replaces the standard daisy wheel with a precision vent cap for finer top vent control. Worth adding if you cook at low temperatures regularly.
EGGmitt BBQ Glove
$45 · Designed specifically for the BGE. Gives you a secure grip on the lid at temperature. A practical addition to any BGE setup.
Maintenance: What Keeps the BGE in Condition
The BGE is designed to last decades. The ceramic components are virtually indestructible under normal use. But there are a few maintenance items worth knowing about from the start.
Dual Palmyra Brush
$40 · The cleaning tool I use before and after every cook. Natural Palmyra bristles clean the grid without the food safety risk of wire bristles that can break off and embed in the surface.
SpeediClean Ceramic Cleaner
$25 · Designed specifically for the BGE's ceramic surfaces. Never clean the ceramic interior with water - it is porous and moisture can cause cracking under heat.
High Performance Gasket Kit
$65 · The felt seal between the lid and base eventually needs replacing. When temperature control becomes less precise, the gasket is the first thing to check.
BGE Cover
From $150 · Protects the metal components, bands, hinge, and draft door from corrosion. Available in multiple sizes. Worth having if the egg lives outdoors permanently.
What You Probably Do Not Need Immediately
The BGE accessory range is extensive and it is easy to over-buy early on. A few things to approach with less urgency:
The Rib Rack ($65) is useful for cooking multiple racks standing upright, but only relevant if you regularly cook three or more racks at once. The EGGspander ($250) is a worthwhile addition once you are cooking regularly and want multi-level cooking flexibility, but it is not something most new owners need from the start. The Cast Iron Skillet ($85) produces excellent results but duplicates functionality you likely already have from your kitchen. The Meat Claws ($40) are useful but most people find they use them less than expected after the first few cooks.
Where to Start
If you have just bought a BGE and want to know what to add first, here is the honest priority order based on nine years of cooking on one.
Start by mastering what you have. The convEGGtor, Grid Gripper, and Ash Tool that came in the box will take you a long way. Add the Pizza and Baking Stone next if you want to try pizza. Add the EGG Genius if you are doing long cooks and want the convenience of remote monitoring. Add the Rotisserie for Sunday roasts. After that, let your cooking experience guide you to the accessories that fill the gaps you actually encounter.
