Coleman Palmyra Twisted Bristle Brush with Scraper

Grill brush with natural Palmyra bristles and scraper. Safer alternative to metal wire brushes. Designed for Coleman Flare-Free double-stacked grates. Heat-resistant to 180°C. 40 cm length. Available at our Wetherill Park showroom.

The Coleman Palmyra Twisted Bristle Brush uses natural Palmyra palm fibres instead of metal wire bristles. Palmyra bristles are stiff enough to remove food residue and carbon deposits from grill grates, but soft enough that they will not break off and become embedded in the grates or food.

Metal wire bristles can break off during cleaning and transfer to food during cooking. If ingested, metal bristles can pierce the digestive tract and cause serious internal injuries requiring surgery. Hospitals treat dozens of wire bristle ingestion cases each year. Palmyra bristles eliminate this risk because the natural fibres are softer and biodegradable. If a Palmyra fibre breaks off, it will not cause the same internal damage as a metal wire.

The brush is specifically designed for Coleman Flare-Free grates, which are double-stacked grate systems. The Palmyra bristles clean both the upper cooking grate and the lower catch grate without damaging either surface. The brush head is configured to reach between the grate layers and remove grease and debris from the catch grate, which maintains proper grease drainage and prevents blockages in the Flare-Free system.

The brush includes a built-in scraper for removing heavily carbonized deposits that require more aggressive cleaning than bristles alone can provide. The scraper is positioned on the brush head for convenient use without switching between separate tools.

The 40 cm length provides reach for cleaning grates while keeping your hands away from residual heat. Palmyra bristles are heat-resistant up to 180°C, which allows you to clean warm grates immediately after cooking.

As an authorised Coleman stockist, we have the Coleman Palmyra Twisted Bristle Brush on display at our Wetherill Park showroom alongside the full Coleman Revolution BBQ range and Coleman accessories.

    What You Get

    • 1 x Coleman Palmyra Twisted Bristle Brush with Scraper
    • Natural Palmyra palm fibre bristles
    • Built-in scraper

    Key Features

Palmyra bristles: safer than metal wire Palmyra is a natural fibre derived from the Palmyra palm tree. The fibres are twisted into the brush head to create stiff bristles that scrub grill grates effectively. Palmyra bristles are heat-resistant up to 180°C, which makes them appropriate for cleaning warm grates immediately after cooking.

The critical advantage of Palmyra bristles is safety. Metal wire bristles (typically steel or brass) can break off during cleaning and become embedded in grill grates. When you cook food on the grates during the next use, the broken bristle can transfer to the food and be ingested. Ingested metal bristles can pierce the digestive tract and cause serious internal injuries requiring surgery.

This is not a theoretical risk. Hospitals treat dozens of wire bristle ingestion cases each year, and some cases result in permanent injury or death. The risk is well-documented in medical literature, and several countries have issued warnings about metal wire grill brushes.

Palmyra bristles eliminate this risk. If a Palmyra fibre breaks off during cleaning, it will not cause the same internal damage as a metal wire because the fibre is softer, flexible, and biodegradable. Palmyra is food-safe and poses minimal risk if accidentally ingested.

Designed for Coleman Flare-Free double-stacked grates Coleman Revolution BBQs use Flare-Free Technology, which incorporates double-stacked grate systems. The primary cooking grate sits above a secondary catch grate. When you cook, grease and fat drip through the primary grate and land on the catch grate, which channels grease forward to a removable grease cup.

Standard grill brushes only clean the top surface of the primary grate. The catch grate below accumulates grease and debris over time, which can block the grease drainage channels and reduce the effectiveness of the Flare-Free system.

The Coleman Palmyra Brush is specifically designed to clean both grate layers. The Palmyra bristles reach between the primary and catch grates to remove grease and debris from the catch grate surface. This maintains proper grease drainage through the Flare-Free system and prevents blockages.

Regular cleaning of both grate layers with the Palmyra brush extends the functional lifespan of the Flare-Free system and maintains optimal grease management performance.

Built-in scraper for heavy deposits The brush includes a built-in scraper positioned on the brush head. The scraper is used for removing heavily carbonized deposits or stubborn residue that bristles alone cannot remove.

Use the bristles for regular maintenance cleaning after each cook. Use the scraper for more aggressive cleaning when food has burned onto the grates or when carbon deposits have accumulated over multiple cooks.

The built-in scraper eliminates the need to switch between separate tools during cleaning. You can scrub with the bristles and scrape heavy deposits without putting down the brush to pick up a separate scraper.

Heat-resistant to 180°C Palmyra bristles are heat-resistant up to 180°C. This temperature rating allows you to clean grates immediately after cooking while they are still warm. Cleaning warm grates is easier than cleaning cold grates because grease and food residue have not yet hardened.

Most BBQ grates cool to below 180°C within 10-15 minutes after turning off the burners. This is the optimal time to clean the grates with the Palmyra brush. The grates are warm enough that residue is still soft and easy to remove, but cool enough that the Palmyra bristles will not degrade from excessive heat.

40 cm length for safe reach The brush measures 40 cm in length, which provides adequate reach for cleaning grates while keeping your hands away from residual heat. The length is standard for full-size grill brushes and provides a good balance between reach and control during use.

Why Metal Wire Bristles Are Dangerous

Traditional grill brushes use metal wire bristles (typically steel or brass) twisted into the brush head. These bristles are effective at removing stuck-on food and carbon deposits, but they pose a serious safety risk.

The problem: Metal wire bristles break off during cleaning and become embedded in grill grates. The broken bristle sits on the grate surface or lodges between the grate bars. When you cook food on the grates during the next use, the broken bristle can transfer to the food and be ingested with the meal.

Ingested metal bristles are sharp, rigid, and non-digestible. They can pierce the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, or intestines. This causes severe internal injuries that often require emergency surgery to remove the bristle and repair the damaged tissue.

    The solution:
Palmyra bristle brushes eliminate this risk. Palmyra fibres are natural, flexible, and biodegradable. If a Palmyra fibre breaks off during cleaning, it poses minimal risk if accidentally ingested. The fibre is soft enough that it will not pierce tissue, and it will pass through the digestive system without causing injury.

Palmyra bristles are not as aggressive as metal wire bristles for removing heavily carbonized deposits, but they are adequate for regular maintenance cleaning. For heavily soiled grates, use the built-in scraper or pre-soak the grates before scrubbing with the Palmyra brush.

How to Clean Coleman Flare-Free Grates

Step 1: Allow grates to cool to below 180°C After cooking, turn off the burners and allow the grates to cool for 10-15 minutes. The grates should be warm but not hot enough to cause immediate burns. Test by holding your hand 15 cm above the grates. If you can hold your hand there comfortably for 5 seconds, the grates are cool enough to clean.

Step 2: Scrub the primary cooking grate Use the Palmyra brush to scrub the top surface of the primary cooking grate. Scrub along the length of the grate bars to remove food residue and grease. Apply firm pressure but avoid excessive force that could damage the bristles.

Step 3: Clean between the primary and catch grates Angle the brush between the primary grate and the catch grate below. Scrub the catch grate surface to remove accumulated grease and debris. This step is essential for maintaining proper grease drainage through the Flare-Free system.

Step 4: Use the scraper for heavy deposits If food has burned onto the grates or carbon deposits are present, use the built-in scraper to remove the deposits. Position the scraper against the grate and apply firm pressure while pulling the scraper along the grate surface.

Step 5: Final brush pass After scraping, make a final pass with the Palmyra bristles to remove loosened debris and restore a clean grate surface.

Step 6: Clean the brush Rinse the Palmyra brush with hot water to remove food particles and grease. Allow the brush to air dry completely before storing. Do not store the brush while wet, as this can promote mildew growth on the natural fibres.

    Care and Maintenance

After each use: Rinse the brush with hot water to remove food particles and grease. Shake off excess water and allow the brush to air dry completely before storing.

Storage: Store the brush in a dry location. Hang the brush by the handle loop or store it horizontally. Do not store the brush while wet or damp, as this can promote mildew growth on the Palmyra fibres.

Replacement: Replace the brush when the bristles become worn, flattened, or frayed. Palmyra bristles typically last 6-12 months with regular use, depending on how frequently you grill and how aggressively you clean.

    Do not:

    • Do not use harsh chemicals or solvents on the brush, as these can degrade the natural Palmyra fibres
    • Do not expose the brush to temperatures above 180°C
    • Do not machine wash or dishwasher clean the brush

    Frequently Asked Questions

Will Palmyra bristles clean as effectively as metal wire bristles?

Palmyra bristles are effective for regular maintenance cleaning after each cook. They remove food residue, grease, and light carbon deposits adequately. For heavily carbonized deposits or burnt-on food, the built-in scraper provides additional cleaning power.

Palmyra bristles are not as aggressive as metal wire bristles for removing very heavy buildup, but they are safer and adequate for users who clean their grates regularly after each use.

How long do Palmyra bristles last?

Palmyra bristles typically last 6-12 months with regular use, depending on how frequently you grill and how aggressively you clean. Replace the brush when the bristles become worn, flattened, or frayed.

Can I use this brush on hot grates?

Yes, but only if the grates are below 180°C. After cooking, turn off the burners and allow the grates to cool for 10-15 minutes before cleaning. The grates should be warm but not hot enough to cause immediate burns. Palmyra bristles degrade if exposed to temperatures above 180°C.
