What the D2 System Actually Is
Inside every Traeger, an auger feeds pellets into a fire pot, and a fan controls the airflow feeding that fire. The D2 controller is the electronics managing both of those in response to the grill's own temperature readings, adjusting pellet feed and airflow to hold your set temperature. It's constantly making small corrections rather than running on a fixed timer, which is why a Traeger can hold within a few degrees of its target for hours at a time rather than swinging up and down.
"D2" is Traeger's name for this generation of the system, distinguishing it from the earlier controller generations used before the brushless motor and Turbo Temp were introduced. It's not a separate accessory or optional upgrade, it's the standard electronics platform built into every current WiFIRE-connected model, so you're not paying extra for it whichever grill in the range you choose. One thing worth knowing: the screen in front of you won't always say "D2" on it. Traeger names each model's on-screen controller after that model, the Woodridge Series Controller, the Ironwood's touchscreen, and so on, while D2 Direct Drive is the electronics platform running underneath all of them. Same engine, different dashboard badge depending which model you're looking at.
Why "Brushless" Matters
The "brushless" part refers to the motor driving the auger and fan. Brushed motors, the older style used in earlier Traeger generations, wear down over time because physical brushes maintain contact with a spinning commutator, generating friction and eventually needing replacement. A brushless motor uses electronic switching instead of physical contact, so there's less to wear out, less friction generating heat and noise, and a longer expected service life under the same amount of use.
This matters more than it sounds for a grill that lives outside in Sydney weather. Brushed motors are also more sensitive to moisture and dust ingress over years of outdoor use, since the brush and commutator contact point is a wear surface exposed to whatever gets into the housing. A brushless design removes that specific failure point, which is one reason we see far fewer motor-related warranty issues on current D2 models than on the older Traeger generations we've serviced in the past.
What This Changes in Practice
Two things stand out day to day. First, startup is faster because the brushless motor and D2 electronics get the fire established more efficiently than older systems, so you're not standing around for as long before you can start cooking. Second, the grill runs noticeably quieter, since there's no brush noise from the motor, which matters more than people expect if your Traeger sits near an outdoor entertaining area where you'll actually hear it running for hours.
Turbo Temp and Lid-Opening Recovery
Temperature recovery after the lid is opened, checking on food, basting, adding more racks, is quicker thanks to Turbo Temp, a feature built into the D2 system specifically for this. Every time the lid comes up, heat escapes and the internal temperature drops. Turbo Temp ramps the auger and fan up temporarily to recover that lost heat faster than the grill would on its own default settings. On a long cook where you're opening the lid repeatedly to baste ribs or check a brisket, that recovery speed adds up, both in total cook time and in how much the internal temperature actually dips each time.
The Auger, the Hopper and What Actually Jams It

Since we're already under the hood, it's worth mentioning the most common real-world issue we see with the auger and fire pot system, and it isn't a D2 electronics fault. It's old or damp pellets left sitting in the hopper for weeks or months between cooks. Pellets can swell, clump or partially break down with humidity, and when that happens the auger can jam trying to feed clumped material through to the fire pot. Every current Traeger has a hopper clean-out door specifically so you can empty unused pellets before a flavour change or before storing the grill over a wet Sydney winter. It's a five minute habit that prevents the single most common service call we get.
Skip the clean-out altogether

Does It Matter Which Model You Buy?
All four WiFIRE-connected Traeger models we stock, the Pro 575, Woodridge Pro, Ironwood XL and Timberline XL, run on the same D2 Direct Drive platform as their baseline, so this isn't a reason to choose between them. The Pro 22 is the one exception in our range, it uses Traeger's Digital Pro Controller instead, an older-style system without D2's brushless drivetrain or Turbo Temp. The Ironwood XL and Timberline XL add Smart Combustion on top of the same underlying D2 principle, using an RTD sensor for even finer feedback alongside insulated cook chambers. But the core D2 experience, faster startup and quicker recovery than older brushed-motor grills, is standard across the Pro 575 through to the Timberline XL regardless of which one you buy.
D2 vs Older Traeger Controllers
If you're upgrading from an older Traeger, or comparing a secondhand model against a new one, this is where D2 actually earns its keep as a selling point. Older Traeger controllers with brushed motors ran louder, took longer to reach temperature from a cold start, and recovered more slowly after the lid was opened. If you've cooked on one of those before and are wondering whether the newer models are a meaningful step up mechanically, not just cosmetically, the D2 system is the honest answer: yes, specifically in those three areas.
We hear this comparison most often from customers who cooked on an older Traeger a decade ago, sold it or handed it down, and are now shopping again after a long break. The honest expectation to set: the current range will feel noticeably different in daily use, not just in spec sheet numbers, from the moment you switch it on.
The Honest Bottom Line
D2 isn't a reason to upgrade within the Pro 575 to Timberline XL range since every one of those models has it, so don't let anyone sell you a Woodridge Pro over a Pro 575 purely on D2 controller grounds. It's more relevant if you're comparing a current Traeger against an older secondhand model, a Pro 22, or a competitor's basic controller. In that comparison, the faster recovery and quieter running are a genuine, noticeable improvement, not marketing language dressed up as a spec.
If you take one thing away from this page, make it the hopper clean-out habit above rather than the D2 electronics themselves. The controller does its job quietly in the background regardless of which model you buy, but pellet maintenance is the one part of grill reliability that's actually on you as the owner, not the manufacturer.
