I've been cooking on Yoder Smokers since 2014, and the question I hear most at the showroom is "which pellets should I buy?" Here's the short version, and then the longer one, using the smoking pellets we actually carry.
Quick answer
- Best all rounder: BBQr's Delight Contest Mix
- Best for brisket: Lumber Jack Char Hickory
- Best if you own a Traeger: genuine Traeger pellets
- Best for a smoke tube: BBQr's Delight 450g smoking pellets
What makes a good smoking pellet?
Good pellets are 100% hardwood with no fillers, binders or oil sprays. The wood is the only ingredient. Cheaper pellets sometimes use an oak filler with a flavour oil sprayed on the outside, and that's what you want to avoid. Every brand we stock, BBQr's Delight, Broil King, Green Mountain Grills, Lumber Jack and Traeger, is real hardwood.
Best overall: BBQr's Delight Contest Mix

BBQr's Delight Contest Mix is 50/50 pecan and cherry mixed with oak. It's Yoder Smokers' main recommended pellet and the one Yoder uses for testing, which is why it's the bag I reach for first. It works across brisket, ribs and chicken in the same cook, so you don't have to swap pellets between cuts.
Best for brisket: Lumber Jack Char Hickory
Hickory is the traditional brisket wood, with oak as the base. Lumber Jack Char Hickory is hickory roasted in oak smoke, and it's our pick for serious brisket cooks. Lumber Jack also has the widest single species range we carry, if you want to pick a specific wood for each cook.
Best if you own a Traeger
We stock genuine Traeger pellets: Cherry, Hickory, Apple and Pecan as single flavours, plus the Signature Blend and Oak & Whiskey Blend. That said, you can use any quality 100% hardwood pellet in any pellet smoker without affecting performance.
Green Mountain Grills and Broil King
Green Mountain Grills pellets come in four blends, Texas, Gold, Fruitwood and Apple. Broil King makes two true blends: Griller's Select is maple, oak and cherry, and Smoke Master's Blend is maple, hickory and cherry.
Best pellets for a smoke tube
If you're adding smoke to a gas grill or kettle with a smoke tube, you don't need a 9kg bag. BBQr's Delight makes 450g smoking pellets in Cherry, Pecan, Hickory, Mesquite and Jack Daniel's. These are flavouring packs for smoke tubes and smoker boxes, not hopper fuel for a pellet grill.
Shop the full 450g range on our smoking pellets collection, kept separate from the larger smoker pellets used as grill fuel.
