Tools & Accessories FAQ
The questions we field most often about covers, tools, knives and replacement parts. Cannot find what you are looking for? Call 0434 010 411 or visit the showroom.
Will a cover fit my specific BBQ model?
Most of our covers are brand-fit covers made by the original manufacturer (Big Green Egg, GMG, NexGrill, Masterbuilt, Broil King). They fit the specific cooker model exactly. Universal covers are also available for older units or third-party brands.
Send us your BBQ make, model and approximate dimensions (width and depth at widest points, plus height including chimney) and we will confirm the right cover before you order.
What is the difference between a chimney starter and a fluid lighter?
A chimney starter uses paper or wood-wool firelighters to light charcoal naturally, with no chemical residue. Pyralit firelighters paired with a chimney give you a clean, hot bed of coals in 15-20 minutes.
Fluid lighters use petroleum-based accelerants that leave a chemical taste on the food and produce harsh fumes. We do not stock fluid lighters and recommend never using them on a kamado or pellet smoker.
Do I need a separate thermometer if my BBQ has a built-in dial?
Yes. Built-in dome thermometers measure the temperature at the lid, which can be 20-40 degrees different from the grate where your meat is cooking. For accurate low and slow cooks, you need a probe thermometer reading at grate level and ideally a probe in the meat itself.
A good wireless or app-connected probe thermometer is one of the highest-leverage accessories you can buy. We stock the full range and can help you pick based on your cooker and cook style.
Which knife do I actually need for BBQ?
Two knives cover 90% of BBQ work:
A long slicer (10 to 14 inch) for clean brisket, pork shoulder and large roast slices. The Tramontina 12-inch Brisket Slicer is a workhorse here. A boning knife (5 to 6 inch) for trimming fat caps, removing silver skin and butchery work. Cutter & Co make excellent versions of both.
If you carve brisket regularly, a long slicer is non-negotiable. A short carving knife will tear the meat across the grain.
How often should I replace gaskets, felt and handles on a Big Green Egg?
The felt gasket on a Big Green Egg typically lasts 3 to 5 years with normal use, though heavy high-temperature cooks (over 320 degrees) can accelerate wear. You will know it is time when the lid no longer seals cleanly or you see visible compression and gaps.
Handles, springs and band hardware should last the life of the cooker, but we stock genuine replacements when needed. Bring your Egg to the showroom and we can help you assess wear and walk you through the replacement.
What is the best way to clean a BBQ grate without damaging the seasoning?
The best practice is to burn off residue while the cooker is hot, then brush down with a quality non-wire brush. Coleman Palmyra natural-bristle brushes are our go-to: no wire bristles that can break off and end up in food, and stiff enough to clear cooked-on residue.
Avoid degreasers and soap on cast iron grates or kamado ceramics, as they strip the seasoning. For deeper clean-ups, a scraper plus warm water and a stiff brush will get the job done.
Do you do same-day Sydney pickup on accessories?
Yes. Order online and collect from our Wetherill Park showroom any business day during opening hours. You can also call ahead on 0434 010 411 to confirm stock and we will set the items aside.
Bring your BBQ to the showroom on quieter days (Wednesday or Thursday afternoons are best) and we will help you spec the right cover, accessories and consumables for it.
What if I am not sure which tools or accessories I actually need?
Call us. Tell us your cooker (make and model), what you cook most often, and what is missing or frustrating in your current set-up. We will recommend the right kit based on real cook experience, not a sales script.
If you would rather see things in person, the showroom is the best place. We have most accessories on display alongside the BBQs they fit, so you can compare and pick up the same day.
