Questions About Charcoal Accessories
What buyers ask before adding heat-resistant gloves or a chimney starter to their charcoal cooking setup.
Do I really need heat-resistant gloves for BBQ?
Standard kitchen oven mitts are designed for short contact with hot surfaces in a contained oven environment. They are not built for sustained 200-400°C heat, sharp grill grates, or live coals.
BBQ-specific gloves use thicker, longer cuffs and heavier insulation to handle extended contact with hot metal, charcoal trays, and chimney starters. They are essential if you cook on charcoal, parrilla, kamado, or any open-flame setup where you need to lift, adjust, or rearrange hot equipment during the cook.
How does a charcoal chimney starter work?
A chimney starter is a metal cylinder with an internal grate that separates charcoal at the top from a small space for newspaper or fire-starter cubes at the bottom. Fill the top with charcoal, light the paper or starter cubes underneath, and the chimney shape draws air upward through the coals.
This produces an evenly ignited stack of charcoal in 10 to 15 minutes. Once the top coals are grey or ashed over, pour the lit charcoal straight into your grill, kamado, or parrilla and begin cooking. The chimney starter is also the cleanest, fastest way to add more charcoal during a long cook.
Do I need lighter fluid with a chimney starter?
No, and you should not use it. A chimney starter is specifically designed to light charcoal without chemicals.
Use a single sheet of newspaper or one to two natural fire-starter cubes underneath the chimney, that is all the fuel needed to ignite the coals. Lighter fluid adds a chemical taste to your food, produces a thicker dirty smoke, and is genuinely unnecessary when you have a chimney. This is one of the reasons we recommend a chimney starter as the first accessory for new charcoal cooks.
Will Argie Grillz gloves and chimney starter work with my Big Green Egg, Weber, or Yoder?
Yes. The Argie Grillz accessories are universal across cooker brands and formats. The heat-resistant gloves work for handling hot grates and equipment across every BBQ type including kamado (Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, Primo), pellet smokers (Yoder, Traeger, Green Mountain Grills), kettle BBQs (Weber), parrilla, and offset smokers.
The chimney starter works with any natural charcoal in any charcoal-burning setup. Even if you primarily cook on a pellet smoker, the gloves remain useful for handling hot grates, pellet hoppers, and the firebox itself.
